The FBI established this classification when it assumed responsibility for ascertaining the protection capabilities and weaknesses of defense plants. Each plant survey was a separate case file, with the survey, supplemental surveys, and all communications dealing with a plant insofar as plant protection was concerned, filed together. John L. Lewis was born in Lucas, Iowa in 1880. From 1917 until his death in 1969 he served the United Mine Workers of America, acting as its president from 1920 to 1960.
